Season 2

by Lauren Melendez

Dear White People is Netflix’s newest and, perhaps, most poignant dramedy. The show focuses on racism at a fictitious Ivy League university. It is centered around main character and student activist, Samantha White, who struggles with both her cultural identity and the racism she faces at her predominantly white school. Based on the 2014 film of the same name, the show sheds some light on topics that has long since needed to be discussed: the racial tensions that people have ignored for far too long.

This is a show that demands to be heard.

Samantha is vocal about her beliefs on her campus radio show “Dear White People.” Tensions rise when a “blackface” party is thrown on campus, meaning the issue can no longer be swept under the rug.

Dear White People is unique in that there is no easily-identifiable human being. It acknowledges that this is a gray area; that there are levels associated with an issue of this gravity. This forces viewers to examine themselves and reflect upon their own actions. best described the show, saying it takes into account all of the social and political forces that shape who we are…the unbalanced relationship between those who have power and those who don’t — and, just as important, those who have power but don’t realize or acknowledge it, and tap that power for good or evil ends without realizing they’re doing it.”

It is a story of struggle, of love, of tension, and of bravery. Samantha had the ambition and the courage to stand up for a group of people whose voices had been silenced. She advocated for change; for acceptance.

Season 2 of this articulate blend of social commentary and humor is scheduled to premiere on Friday, May 4, 2018. If you are looking for a show that can simultaneously entertain you and inform you, a show that combines drama and humor, then Dear White People is for you!

Luis Miguel in concert

by Oscar Castillo

Luis Miguel Gallego Basteri was born in April 19, 1970 in Puerto Rico and raised in Mexico. Often nicknamed “El Sol de Mexico,” he is from Spanish and Italian descent. His father was Luis Gallego Sanchez, a Spanish singer, and his mother was Marcela Basteri, an Italian actress. When Luis Miguel was young, his father encouraged him to study Elvis Presley and mimic his style, an endeavor that paid off.

In 1981, at the age of 11, Luis Miguel released his first album, “Un Sol,” and two years later, he started touring Latin American countries including Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, and Argentina. In 1990, he made a successful transition from a child singer to an adult showman with the album “20 Años” and an ensuing string of sold-out shows first in Mexico, then throughout Latin America and elsewhere in the world.

The album “20 Años” sold 600,000 copies in its first week of release and resulted in two of the tracks hitting number one on Billboard’s Hot Latin Tracks in 1990. Luis Miguel’s career has spanned more than twenty-five years and has become one of, if not the most iconic singer of Latin America.

His wide vocal range of music from pop to bolero, mariachi and romantic ballads, has made him one of the most popular Latin American artists ever and has been praised by critics and other artists all over. Although extremely private about his personal life, he is somehow always making news and his popularity has spanned across entire generations. There is not a Latino alive who does not know who Luismi is. Currently on tour with his latest album, “Mexico Por Siempre!,” Luismi will arrive at the Laredo Energy Arena on May 29. An Abiding Classic

by Oscar Castillo

We all love our coffee. It is our awakening elixir that invigorates us each morning with its nutty, smooth aroma. In the mornings, it is customary to drink it hot, but in the afternoons, or even during the summertime, we tend to like our coffee iced. When going out on the town, many will debate between a nice dose of iced java at a café or a strong drink at a bar to make things just a bit more fun. However, the White Russian is the best of both worlds.

Though not really originating from Russia, it is so named due to its main component being vodka. Also known as a Caucasian, the drink initially starts as a Black Russian as many may prefer it. It consists of vodka and coffee liqueur such as Kahlua. Add some fresh cream, or even milk in some cases, and the Russian goes from Black to White. The black version of this drink is more on the nutty and bitter side, so coffee purists may enjoy this version a bit better. The white incarnation is creamier and sweeter, which is perfect to also sate your sweet tooth.  Served on the rocks, it is a perfect summer drink to kick back and relax to after a heavy day at the office.

Although its origin is not clear, one of the first recipes for this drink appeared on the newspaper The Oakland Tribute in 1965. However, it rose to popularity thanks to the classic 1998 film The Big Lebowski, where it served as a preferred drink to Jeff Bridges’ character, “The Dude.” A fresh, delicious treat, try asking for a White Russian next time out on the town.

Eye of the Beholder

By Mariajose Mendiola for @LaredoEats

There is a special saying my mom says every time we are at a restaurant, “De la vista, nace el amor.” What she means by that is that by what you see visually, you will know if you will love it or not. It helps to have pictures of food at a restaurant or to have a source to go see pictures of what maybe you would like to order. My goal for Laredo Eats is to exactly do that for the people of Laredo. I want you guys to go here or my Instagram page @laredoeats to fall in love with what I fall in love with! My hungry eye is always on the lookout. This month, we went to the new and trendy SHIBU. I absolutely love this place and their delicious bowls and Sushi Burritos. For me, the perfect post workout meal is the bowl here. There are so many options they have to offer, so you basically can put anything in there. So healthy and YUMMY! Next, my sweet tooth took advantage of me and took me to Titey’s Cakes, and OMG we were in Cheesecake heaven with these cheesecake sandwiches. So yummy and cute, they were a hit, so maybe you guys should go taste sweet heaven too. Then came along Sunday brunch, which is my favorite time of the week! I love enjoying a beautiful afternoon at La Finca Brucheria & Cafe because of their delicious traditional options. I have a weird yet satisfying soft spot for molletes, and the molletes here are to die for! They are a great traditional dish with a twist. Last but not least, I had lunch at Alamo Drafthouse. What I love about Alamo is that you don’t necessarily have to go to the movies to go here. I love their side restaurant and the food there. So many YUMMY options so why not just order it all? We hope you fell in love as much as I did! Stay hungry Laredo. NOM NOM.

A Classic Treat

by Oscar Castillo

When it comes to Mother’s Day, nothing screams “motherly appreciation” as does a delicious cake. Whether presenting it to mom to celebrate her day, or bringing it at the family gathering, a good cake speaks more than a million words. Be the star of the potluck with a Mexican classic: Tres Leches Cake.

Tres Leches is a beloved recipe, and just the mention of the cake is enough to make an inadvertent listener to be piqued with interest and for mouths to start drooling. Tres Leches gets its iconic name for the use of the titular three types of milk necessary for its gooey consistency. It requires evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and whole milk.

The cake itself starts off as any typical vanilla recipe. However, once the cake has been created, holes are poked throughout and the mixture of the three milks is then poured on the cake, seeping through all the holes. The cake and milk mixture are to be left to be cooled and for the bread to absorb all of the liquid. It is recommended to pour it in slowly and in waves to allow all of the cake to get equally soaked. Once the entire thing is properly fused and the milk mixture has been absorbed, then one can begin adding toppings or even decorating the cake. It is common to add a whipped cream topping as well as fresh strawberries or cherries, and even roasted nuts. It is a delectable recipe that is simply to die for.

Because Mom deserves the Best

by Oscar Castillo

Mother’s Day is all about treating that special lady in your life to a good time. It’s nice to just kick back and go out for some good food while reminiscing about life and just enjoying each other’s company. A great way to bond over yummy food is to go out for brunch. Brunch is that early afternoon treat that usually involves taking care of your sweet tooth. We’re all about our food, so we thought we’d mention a couple great options for your brunch with mom.

To start off, Delicias De La Tierra offers a grand variety as well as many healthy options. From eggs in a variety of formats to wraps, salads, sandwiches, and soups, Delicias has something for everyone. Every item on the menu can be as healthy as you want with their many choices for a personalized meal. Don’t forget to accompany your meal with a healthy juice. Delicias also features pancakes and waffles as well as oatmeal and fruit salads for a sweeter palate. If we’re talking about pancakes however, one can never go wrong with IHOP. The International House of Pancakes is a safe bet when you’re craving that sweet treat. With endless cups of coffee, it’s a great place to relax and spend the afternoon.

For something a bit heartier, Paulita’s is a Laredo classic. Paulita’s restaurant has made a name for itself thanks to it delicious and enormous breakfast tacos. From bacon and egg to beans and cheese, each taco is deliciously crafted around their delicious handmade flour tortillas which just hit the spot. Another great option is La Finca, Bruncheria and Café. They have authentic Mexican favorites such as chilaquiles, and other delicious morsels as their French toast with fresh fruit, omelets, and toasted biscuits. Of course, no good brunch is complete without a good mimosa or piña colada, so keep your spirits up this mother’s day and let mom know exactly how much you love her by treating her to a nice meal.

Standing Tall

by Oscar Saucedo

Your posture is a great way to tell if your skeletal muscle system is in good condition.  A good trainer can quickly evaluate which of your muscles are weak and which need more flexibility based only on your posture.

If you are relatively inactive, or if your movement patterns are poor, you probably have some or all of the following: 1) feet that turn outward; 2) knees that buckle inward; 3) hips that are tilted forward; 4) shoulders that are hunched forward; 5) head that falls forward.  All of these can cause knee, hip, back, and neck pain.  While we can’t cover every situation, let’s go over some of the causes of each of these.

Feet. A common cause of externally rotated feet is a lack of flexibility in your calf muscle.  This is very common, especially in people that often wear higher-heeled shoes. When your calves are tight and inflexible, the front of your lower leg is stretched out and elongated.  Because your body will seek “the path of least resistance”, feet will turn out as you walk, run, or squat.  To help correct this, stretch and foam roll your calf muscles as part of your fitness routine.

Knees.  If your feet turn out, your knees start off buckled inward.  But even if your feet are properly aligned, knees can still turn in because of tight inner thigh muscles and tight tensor fasciae latae (TFL) muscle.  When a muscle is tight, the opposing muscle is elongated.  This causes imbalance and stress on the joint that those muscles surround.  Just like when your car’s front-end is out of alignment and causes uneven wear on tires, this lack of muscular balance and alignment can cause some uneven stress on your joints.  Stretch and foam roll your inner thighs, TFL, and iliotibial (IT) band as part of your flexibility training.

Hips.  We all sit quite a bit.  While you are seated, the muscles on the front of your hip (hip flexors) are shortened and the opposing muscles (gluteus complex) are elongated.  Eventually, you can develop tightness in the hip flexors. A simplified description of this would posture be to imagine your hips are a bowl tipped forward a bit.  Looking at a side view of the hips, you can see a noticeable bend at the hip while standing.  When the hips are tilted forward, your body will try to straighten up using the lower back muscles.  This can lead to lower back overuse injury or pain.  Ask a trainer to show you some hip flexor stretches to use as part of your fitness routine.

Shoulders. Driving, typing, writing.  In each of these positions, your chest muscles are shortened and your middle back muscles are elongated.  I like to call the middle back muscles “the posture muscles” because hunched shoulders are the most noticeable form of bad posture.  To help correct this, take the time to stretch and foam roll your chest muscles and latissimus dorsi while strengthening your middle back muscles.

Head. Forward head posture can cause quite a few problems.  Among them are headaches, incorrect breathing patterns, and cervical spine issues.  That really isn’t something to mess with.  Fix your posture by making an effort to line your neck up properly (try tucking your chin back as if to make a “double chin”), stretch the muscles at the front of your neck, and strengthen the muscles at the back of your neck.

This topic is too large to cover here.  But be aware that good posture, proper alignment, and good quality of movement are essential to staying injury-free and pain-free for as long as possible.

The Backbone of Families

by Oscar Castillo

In every family, there is that one individual who is always there to help and support. These pillars of virtue and wisdom are the ones we oftentimes cannot picture ourselves without. Life would certainly not be the same (nor probably even exist) without mothers. For the most part, they carry us within themselves for nine months, they care for us when we are sick, heal us when we are hurt, and comfort us after a stressful day. Certainly, mothers and mother figures are the backbones of any family.

May is eponymous of Mother’s Day. On this day, we are often reminded how lucky we are for the women in our lives and how they have nurtured and helped us achieve our dreams. The month itself is said to be named after the Greek goddess Maia who symbolized growth and nurturing. In many countries, there are feasts and festivals dedicated entirely to mothers and their significance in society, and in general, to all of life.

However, the modern iteration of Mother’s Day that we know and celebrate is thanks to Anna Jarvis and her mother Ann. Mother Jarvis wanted to establish the day as a holiday ever since the Civil War as a day of remembrance. The intended significance of the day was something akin to a memorial day but focused rather on mothers. When her mother passed away in 1905, she held a service for her, celebrating her good deeds. After forming a committee in 1910, she finally got the holiday recognized, first in West Virginia, then the other states. However, despite Jarvis’ initial mission, the holiday became commercialized and focused on a more materialistic observance. Despite this, Mother’s Day still holds a special place in our hearts as it is a day we like to show our appreciation in various ways.

Mother’s Day in Laredo is usually spent “en familia.” The whole family comes over and we shower our special ladies with affection and tokens of appreciation. Apart from the cookouts and family outings however, it is important to appreciate mom every day. We never know when our old lady will be taken from us, so it is important to love them while they’re here. Mothers are the ones who carry us within their bodies and care for us when we otherwise cannot do so ourselves. Mothers are the backbones of our families and the heart of a home.

We salute our single mothers, and our working mothers, and our adoptive mothers for their labor is no simple task. Mother’s Day is not only for our biological progenitors, but those individuals who have been there for us and supported us along the way. Some of us may not have a mother to celebrate, but there will always be someone there to guide us along and protect us. To those single fathers who are both father and mother, we would like to also thank and show our appreciation. Life, especially nowadays, is no walk in the park, but somehow these heroes of the everyday manage to do it.

Of course, family and mothers don’t always refer to those related by blood. Perhaps mom isn’t in the picture, but someone else rose up to the challenge of being there for one. Perhaps it is a relative or a friend or the mother of a friend or perhaps someone else entirely that cared for how much you have eaten or whether or not you are doing well in school. Sometimes it isn’t relatives we think of as our family but rather those good friends or acquaintances who have chosen to stand by you both in the good times and bad. Whoever that person is, we should always remember who was there to see us grow.

On their day, make sure your mother figures know you appreciate them and how much they have taught you. Show them the fruits of their labor by giving back a bit of their warmth and care. Old and young, near and far, related by blood or not, remember to give them a call, send them a letter, get a flower arrangement, or take them out on the town. To our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and everyone out there who falls under the “mother” category, we wish you a beautiful Mother’s Day. Know that we love you.
