New Year, New Promises: ¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

by Chapa

It’s December 31st, fireworks are meeting the sky five minutes before midnight. Everybody is holding a needle to pop the balloons hanging from the walls, prima Paty is ready to run around the block with her suitcase in hopes for a handful of travels, and the cumbias made a pause to hear the radio countdown for the new year. Once that clock strikes at twelve, twelve magical grapes enter our mouths in under a minute, each being a wish that will come true each month. Between hugs, chews, and happy tears, some of us can’t help but hope our red underwear works this time and actually brings in the love interest we’ve been looking for. We’re leaving our fate to the color of our undies, so fingers crossed we chose wisely. It’s a beautiful sight, a tequila in one hand, primo Betito on top of the roof with the piñata we are about to hit, the task has been handed down. Oh, they grown up so fast. We don’t let the cold keep us from ringing in the New Year the right way. ¡Que comience la fiesta!

In the light of the upcoming new year, let’s revisit those 2018 moments where you shed tears until your eyes were dry, laughed until your stomach hurt, and danced the night away in your living room on a lazy Monday afternoon. Reflect on them. Think about the person that is entering these fresh twelve months. How much have you grown? Have you realized how strong you are? Think about your goals. Have they been met? Are you where you want to be? And most importantly, are you happy? My advice, grab a broom and start sweeping the front door toward the street. Get rid of all the negativity and welcome January 1st with good vibes. If you don’t think that would work, try putting money on your shoe, standing on your right foot the first second of the year, light a candle or throw a bucket of water out of a window. One of them is bound to work. Trust my abuelita’s superstitions, que en paz descanse. Believe me, there has yet to be someone to have proved her wrong.

As we reflect what this past year meant to us, let this new year be prosperous and let it be everything our heart desires, from hope for the world to simply being happy each day. May this year bring new happiness, new goals, new achievements and a lot of new inspirations on your life. Wishing you a year fully loaded with peace and happiness that do not cease. Wishing every day of the new year to be filled with success, joy and prosperity for you. Tres…dos…uno, so long and good riddance 2018. Hello, 2019!
