Eye of the Beholder

By Mariajose Mendiola for @LaredoEats

There is a special saying my mom says every time we are at a restaurant, “De la vista, nace el amor.” What she means by that is that by what you see visually, you will know if you will love it or not. It helps to have pictures of food at a restaurant or to have a source to go see pictures of what maybe you would like to order. My goal for Laredo Eats is to exactly do that for the people of Laredo. I want you guys to go here or my Instagram page @laredoeats to fall in love with what I fall in love with! My hungry eye is always on the lookout. This month, we went to the new and trendy SHIBU. I absolutely love this place and their delicious bowls and Sushi Burritos. For me, the perfect post workout meal is the bowl here. There are so many options they have to offer, so you basically can put anything in there. So healthy and YUMMY! Next, my sweet tooth took advantage of me and took me to Titey’s Cakes, and OMG we were in Cheesecake heaven with these cheesecake sandwiches. So yummy and cute, they were a hit, so maybe you guys should go taste sweet heaven too. Then came along Sunday brunch, which is my favorite time of the week! I love enjoying a beautiful afternoon at La Finca Brucheria & Cafe because of their delicious traditional options. I have a weird yet satisfying soft spot for molletes, and the molletes here are to die for! They are a great traditional dish with a twist. Last but not least, I had lunch at Alamo Drafthouse. What I love about Alamo is that you don’t necessarily have to go to the movies to go here. I love their side restaurant and the food there. So many YUMMY options so why not just order it all? We hope you fell in love as much as I did! Stay hungry Laredo. NOM NOM.

Plenty of Fish

This month, my foodie tummy was craving something a little bit more towards the Lent season type of foods. As a “Laredoan,” we take lent very seriously, and sometimes we just don’t know where to eat with all that delicious food out there. Don’t worry guys, we’ve got you covered with some scrumptious options.

First, lets start with one of the newest and most trendiest places in Laredo: SHIBU. Shibu is literally the bomb.com; such a cool place to hang at, and they have Sushi Burritos! Like what?!?! Let me just say that i had the “Tsuna” Burrito, and my tastebuds were extremely pleased. Don’t forgot to also try the bowl, it’s just as good! Next we headed to one of our go-to places, Posh! We love our poke bowls and sushi rolls there. Instead of simply getting a tuna bowl or just a salmon bowl, try it mixed! You get the best of both worlds in one bite! The next Friday, we were craving some fresh Ceviche and Fish tacos from La Mariscana. La Sirena Ceviche is probably our favorite, and it’s a must to order each time i go. It is perfectly filling whether you want to share it or just have on your own. We also were craving something a little warm & cheesy (perfect combo) so we got the “El Governardor,” which is also just so scrumptious. Last but not least, we were craving a little bit of sweet, and i mean all this fish is making us lose weight, so why not go for some Krispy Kreme Donuts? Do i even have to explain how yummy these doughnuts are? I mean who doesn’t know that already? All we can say is that our tummies and hearts were very happy. Hope you guys got a little hungrier just reading this. Don’t forgot about Meatless Fridays and all the eating possibilities. NOM NOM.

Foodie Escapades

by Mariajose Mendiola for @LaredoEats

I had lots of foodie adventures this past month. From cafe’s, to bakeries, to across the river street food, to Italian restaurants, the possibilities were endless. I just wanted to make my stomach and my tastebuds happy because being “HANGRY” is a real thing, and you don’t want to see me hangry. Our first stop was at Flip Flop Coffee Shop where we enjoyed a delicious peppermint seasonal latte and some avocado toast with feta and a fried egg. This place is the perfect spot to relax and chit chat with a BFF or to go and get your study on! Lots of delicious caffeine options, snacks, and scrumptious breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. The next foodie adventure was enjoyed at home with the FAM. We celebrated “Dia de Los Reyes Magos” at home with a yummy yet so pretty mini rosca from Titey’s Cakes. It was such a sweet tooth satisfying moment and I also got the “little baby Jesus,” guess now I have to make everyone tamales! Later on that week I went across and came across an old friend, and by old friend I mean a caramel filled churro. Seriously, I consider this the original churro, don’t get me wrong there is a lot of amazing places that sell churros out there but this one is just one of a kind. Lastly I think i fell in love all over again with this cheesy pizza from Trattoria Mia. This pizza, and it’s fresh ingredients was just the “cheery on top” to that dinner date. It had cheese, and Italian sausage all over and all I can say is that I have no regrets. So this is the ending to this month’s foodie adventure and I hope I got your mouth watering. NOM NOM.

Discovering Laredo One Plate At A Time

by Mariajose Mendiola for @LaredoEats

What can I say, 2017 was really good to me! It brought us lots of new and delicious places to go eat at, which meant I got to try more food. Not only that, but this is the year Laredo Eats became part of the DeLaredo Squad! (#squadgoals!) In this piece, I will be talking about my top 4 foodie posts, and coincidentally, these places also happen to have opened in the year of 2017!

First of all, who was on that all-carb diet? I went on an Italian venture just north of Laredo at Trattoria Mia. This Restaurant has delicious pasta dishes made from scratch and you know we had to get that pizza to share. I mean, it’s almost a crime if you don’t order a pizza at an Italian restaurant, am I right? It was “delizioso!”

Next, those hot days of 2017 brought us a delicious treat that helped us stay “Cool for the Summer” at Bubble Waffle. The name is pretty self explanatory, i had the yummy bubble waffle cones with scoops of ice cream and toppings. The combination of bubble waffle with ice-cream was just ridiculously amazing, it’s not only because i have a sweet tooth, but because it makes such a great dessert!

Who else loves food trucks? There’s a beer garden and music all in the same spot! We went to the Cultura beer garden to jam out to some good music, have a cold beer, but most importantly, try the awesome food there. We loved the loaded Mexican Hotdog and Chile Relleno Balls from “Clementine’s Food Truck!” We didn’t want this heavenly experience to end.

Last but not least, we had brunch at Anise Kitchen + Market! Life really is good after you get to enjoy some good food and company. We had the steak & eggs and the Eggs Benny from their brunch menu, and we devoured every bite! Gave us a full tummy and the perfect amount of energy to start the day, especially with freshly made iced coffee!

Thank you,”Laredo Eaters” for supporting me and our local foodie spots! Also, this year was so great I just can’t wait for what 2018 has in store. I’m hoping it’s more places like the ones I have posted. Nom Nom. A-DI-OS 2017, HELLO 2018!
